| FAQ
Is the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort separate from the Town of Jackson?
Yes, the ski area is located in Teton Village, about 20 miles from the Town of Jackson. There is a ski area in the Town of Jackson by the name of Snow King, but is a much smaller mountain with a few steeper runs.
Do I need to rent a car if I am staying in the Town of Jackson?
No, not necessarily. We try to discourage from car rental in Jackson in the winter as the roads are often slick and snowy. There are public buses that run all day and late into the night from Jackson to Teton Village and back. The cost for this is minimal. There are also public buses running throughout the Town of Jackson for free. Most accomodations have a bus stop at the accomodation or very near by. Many accomodations have their own scheduled free shuttles out to the ski area at Teton Village.
Where should I stay for the most shopping and dining options?
If you want endless shopping and dining options, the Town of Jackson is the best place to stay, however Teton Village has recently seen a growth in dining options and has some very nice restaurants.
Can I wait to book activities when I arrive?
Yes, but snowmobiling in Yellowstone and Dogsledding fill up very quickly. It is a good idea to book these ahead of time.
How do the lift passes work, I notice they read 4 of 6 days, etc.?
Basically this means that you will need to pick a start date for your lift pass. You have 4 skiable days and the six days from your start date in which to use them.
Is there such a thing as an all area pass for Snow King, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and Grand Targhee?
No, unfortunately there is not. We recommend purchasing just Jackson Hole Mountain Resort lift tickets and if you decide to ski Snow King while you are here, these are pretty inexpensive. Also, if you are going to be here on vacation for more than 5 days, we recommend at least 1 day at Grand Targhee ski area. The tickets for Grand Targhee include transportation from your lodging and cost less than a day at JHMR.
Some North American resorts have guiding sytems - does that apply in Jackson as well?
As for guiding in Jackson Hole, it is quite expensive as the JH Mountain Resort does not allow any other companies to guide. It is about $225 for a full day backcountry guiding in a group (this includes avalanche tranceiver, pack, shovel, probe, etc). It is not really necessary though because if we have powder, the entire mountain is skiable so there is plenty of off-piste skiing. Another option if you wanted to get to know the in-bounds areas is to have a group lesson which is $90 per full day to learn and be guided around the mountain itself.
Is it possible to rent my skis for only the days I will be skiing?
Unfortunately it is always hard to determine which days of your vacation you will be skiing so most people just rent them for the entire time they are here. It is very difficult to rent for a day and return and rent for another day. Each time, they must set the ski equipment for your skiing ability, height and weight.
Where does everyone go for Apres Ski?
The most popular place for Apres Ski is located at the base of JHMR. It is called Mangy Moose and is the classic place to stop in and have a drink after a long day on the slopes.
What else is there to do besides skiing and boarding?
There are many activities off of the slopes. Most people enjoy guided snowmobiling and dogsledding day trips. There is also guided snowshoeing, cross country skiing and paragliding on sunny days. Of course there are also non-active pursuits such as shopping, museums, art galleries, movies and plays. |
